F2 | Zebio and Zingarella

The itinerary, from which you may enjoy a panoramic view of the Plateau central plain, focuses on Monte Zebio, the scene of bitter battles that indelibly marked this territory during the First World War. The trail is rich with historical evidence and places of interest, particularly the Austro-Hungarian citadel Crocetta di Zebio, the Brigata Sassari cemetery area and the Mina di Scalambron.

Sites of interest along the route:

• Monte Zebiois an important site of the Ecomuseo della Grande Guerra Prealpi Vicentine, as well as a point of passage for the Sentiero della Pace (Peace Trail). Sadly famous is the event of the mine (made by the Italians beginning from autumn 1916 under the Lunetta’s spur) that exploded in an untimely manner, perhaps due to a lightning strike, on 8 June 1917 at 17:30 (two days earlier than had been established), also causing an explosion in the Austrian countermine. In addition to the 120 Italian soldiers who lost their lives here, there were also more than forty officers from the Catania Brigade who were observing the Austrian positions from the Lunetta at that moment in anticipation of the Battle of Ortigara.
• The presence of numerousrecovered trenchesis highly significant, as is the Sassari Brigade War Cemetery, the promotion of which was possible thanks to collaboration with the Sardinian Municipalities where most of the soldiers who fell here were from.
